Canberra Day

More than 10,000 residents residing in Canberra came together on Sunday, 12 March 2017 for the annual family carnival.  The event launched this year focused on the theme; Love your Environment, Let’s Go Green!

Our Green club and some students from 6 Diligence have actually set up some creative "green" games booth on that day. There were also quizzes prepared by them that were related to caring for the environment for the community to participate. Some of the tokens in the form of book marks were even made by our students to help spread the green messages.

We are very happy that our school has played a part to engage the community through games and at the same time learnt more about how to go green.  This event provided a good platform for our students to interact with the residents. This also allowed them to make new friends and enhanced their interpersonal skills and confidence.

Yes! Together we can play our part in building a more gracious society through green practices and championing a sustainable way of life.

Performing Household Chores

Based on the positive response received last year, our CCE/VIA team rolled out the Family Household Chores Appreciation Card project once again this year!

We hope to encourage our students to assist their parents/guardians in doing household chores, as a way to show care and concern for their family members. It is also their responsibility to take charge of these tasks at home (especially of their own rooms).

This year, we hope to also garner greater parents' engagement. We would like to encourage parents to pen down your thoughts upon seeing your child's efforts and work through the completion of the household tasks.

One of our P6 boys, Bryan Sun from 6A, has been consistently helping his parents with the household chores. You may want to view his appreciation card that was nicely done up:

Seen here is another of our P6 boys, Brandon Goh Yi Heng from 6B. who is cooking instant noodles for his mother.

Next up, this P3 girl is Juana Little Sia from 3B. She and her mother were making pancakes together. She brought the pancakes to school and shared with her classmates.

Visit to SWAMI Home

SWAMI (Sunshine Welfare Action Mission) home is a nursing home that provides residential nursing care facilities and  dementia day care for the aged and the aged sick. It is located in Sembawang, and houses services such as physiotherapy, medical treatment rooms and rehabilitation services all under one roof.

On 22 May 2015, our EDP students, teachers, and parents volunteers spent a meaningful afternoon at the SWAMI Home. Our talented students from the performing arts group (Choir, Guitar and Gu Zheng) prepared a line up of performances for all to enjoy. As most elderly only know dialect and mandarin, our performing arts group specially prepared songs that are in their familiar language to cater to them! Apart from that, understanding that the bedridden residents are not able to join us at the stage area for the performance, our student-guitarists took the initiatives to head up to the rooms instead to strum and sing for them. Delectable high-tea snacks and drinks were also prepared and served to all residents at the Home. Following that, we had a mass singing session that brought everyone clapping along together! It was indeed heartwarming to see the elderly smiling and singing along with the music.

Although interacting with the elderly might not be easy for everyone due to the language barrier, it was still a fruitful and enjoyable learning experience. More importantly, what is significant is the smiles we have left on the elderly faces during the visit.

As the saying goes, it is a blessing to give than to receive.
Let us continue to reach out to the community, and to spread the EDP spirit of care!
